Angela asks for your views on the future of the BBC

Angela, is asking for your views for the BBC consultation Delivering Quality First.

The television license fee has been frozen until 2017, resulting in a real-terms cut over the next few years. As a result, the BBC Trust has launched a consultation to ascertain where the public feel the cuts should be best delivered.

Commenting, Angela Smith MP said;

“The BBC, like all public services, has been told it must save money with a real-term cut to its funding. In addition to efficiencies, the BBC will have to make cuts in services, and it is important that these cuts are made in the right way.”

The Director-General has set a target of cutting 20% by 2016-17, around half of which will be made up of cuts to services. The BBC plans to prioritise the services most valued by the public.

 Commenting further Angela said;

I’m sure everyone will agree that the BBC is a highly-valued public service, and it is therefore important to ensure that everyone’s views are heard in order to arrive at a decision that is as fair as possible. I would encourage everyone to submit their views to the BBC Trust and also, if they wish, to my office in order that I can take them into account when considering my own response.

The proposals and consultation documents are available online at www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/consult/index.shtml and the consultation runs until 21st December 2011.

Angela shows support for local businesses

Locals in Dodworth recently had a surprise when visiting the local Fish and Chip shop on Station Road, Dodworth. Behind the counter was no other than was local Penistone MP, Angela Smith.

She was there helping out local trader David Shaw to show she is right behind local businesses trying to prosper in these hard times.

The Shaw Family chip shop is a heart-warming success story at the centre of the village. It is a long standing business that has real community spirit in this former mining village.

It is still well remembered by many how during the Miners strike, Dave Shaw was regularly found returning to his former colleagues on the picket line to hand out much-needed hot Fish and Chips.

Commenting on her visit Angela said,

“Local businesses are the vital lifeblood of many areas, especially small villages like Dodworth.

I really enjoyed my time behind the counter helping to serve local people. It was great to talk to them as they queued for fish n chips. It is a meeting place for friends, with people catching up with each other and swapping the latest news.”

Local owner David Shaw, said;

“It was great to have our local MP serving in our shop and supporting local businesses. Mind you many of our customers had a surprise when she served them with their Fish n Chips, which just goes to show that some MPs do want to be in touch with their constituents.

 If she ever wants to give up Parliament I’m sure she’ll make a great shop assistant.”

 Seriously though I would like to thank Angela for coming along and helping to promote the great services local businesses do for local communities in Dodworth and beyond.”

Constituency MP of the Year is given front bench job

Angela has been promoted to the Labour’s front bench as Shadow Leader of the House.

She will be working with Angela Eagle MP, who has been given the job of Shadow Leader of the House.

Commenting,  Angela said,

I am delighted to be asked to Join Ed Miliband’s new generation as the party makes sure this Government is not only held to account but speaks to the public and the country at large.

Along with the Shadow Leader of the House I intend to make sure this government is held to account for its actions right in the heart of Parliament.

Angela Welcomes Low Floor Buses

FIRST bus passengers in Stocksbridge are now benefitting from newer customer friendly buses after discussions between the company, Angela Smith MP and the Town Council.

Seven low-floor single deck buses that are more suitable for a majority of passengers, including disabled people, the elderly and parents with push chairs, have now been placed into service on four First services that serve Stocksbridge. (details of services in notes to editors below)They replace older style ‘step entrance’ buses that had been used and which are now being taken out of service by First as part of its plans to make its entire fleet low floor.

First has listened to the views of Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith, as well as Stocksbridge Town Council, in reaching its decision to replace buses on Stocksbridge routes.

First is now urging people in the Stocksbridge area to try out its buses and to give them feedback on the changes.

Phil Robinson, Operations Director for First in South Yorkshire, said: “We are happy to place newer low floor buses into the Stocksbridge area.

“We have listened to the views of Angela Smith MP and Stocksbridge Town Council and we are now urging local people to try out these buses and let us know what they think.

Angela said: “On behalf of my constituents I would like to thank First for making these changes to the type of buses being used in Stocksbridge.

“I hope this move, which should benefit many,  including the elderly, the disabled and young parents, will generate an increase in bus patronage, as customers tell me they want better buses.“

Angela's Expenses

In addition to their salary, MPs are allowed to claim various expenses or allowances to enable them carry out duties on behalf of constituents

These allowances or expenses cover things such as running offices in the constituency and Westminster, the paying of staff, as well as claiming for a second home, which is necessary expense for many MPs who have to spend part of the week in Westminster.

In the spirit of openness, these claims can be seen by going here.

From May 7th the new Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority will take over the scrutiny of MPs expenses. They will publish the full totals of all Members expenses online on a 3 monthly basis. For more details go here
